A portion of the city extends on the shores of a canyon more than 100 meters deep, carved into the limestone rock by Torrente Gravina, a tributary of the Bradano river. From it the name of the famous "Gravine" of the Murgia, a region characterized by numerous karst cavities, such as the Gravina Botromagno and the deep Pulicchio of Gravina.
