Overlooking the square of the Baths of Nero, it is one of the gates in the walls of Pisa. It was opened by the Florentines during their domination in the second half of the sixteenth century to replace the nearby prestigious Porta al Parlascio, which was enclosed by a rampart.
With a new monumental gate, in the seventeenth century the ancient medieval arch was enriched by a double frame made of sandstone, now worn and broken in several points, with ashlar also in the ring.
Nowadays the gate is surrounded by new buildings and below the door goes a paved road, which increases the potential damages to the structure. The gate named the surrounding residential neighborhood, inhabited by about 20,000 people and home to the Stadium Arena Garibaldi and the Military School Italian Folgore Parachute Army.
