Girone Tower, due to the moat that surrounded it, also called "del Tormento" due to the fact that later it was used as a prison is a medieval tower is situated in Piazza delle Erbe, in the rear of the Palladian Basilica, in which the tower is connected to the Arc of Zavatteri.
It was built in the twelfth century by the Carnaroli family. In the following century it was purchased by the City of Vicenza that used it as prison and civic archives and registry. In 1509 it was set on fire by some miscreants who wanted to destroy the evidence against them. On this occasion burned the archives too. From the mid-seventeenth century to the second half of the nineteenth century the tower was used again as a prison, later moved to San Biagio.
