The church of San Vincenzo is a historic place of Catholic worship in Vicenza. The construction and the subsequent enlargements range from the late fourteenth to the first half of the eighteenth century. The facade stands on the Piazza dei Signori, facing the Palladian Basilica, and is inserted in the center of the Palazzo del Monte di Pieta, interrupting its uniform texture.
The church is open once a week, on Sunday morning, when the Latin Mass is held (it's the only church in Vicenza where the Mass is celebrated according to the Tridentine rite).
Designed by the architects Paolo and Pietro Bonin, the facade of the building was erected between 1614 and 1617. It has two loggias with three arches, with Corinthian and composite columns: loggias are surmounted by a beautiful crown that shows Christ mourned by Angels, made by Giambattista Albanese sculptor, one of the masterpieces of the late artist's production as a prelude to Baroque art. Of the same artist are the five statues in the pediment, representing the Saints Vincenzo, Carpoforo , Leonzio, Felice and Fortunato (1614-1617). These works - considered among the best of Albanese - reproduce the intensity and luminosity of the sculptures of Alessandro Vittoria. La façade also performs a remarkable aesthetic function, as it harmonizes the asymmetries of the two bodies of the palace, built at different times. Only the lower loggia belongs to the church, while the upper masks work environments of the offices of the Monte, located on the main floor.
