It is the city's main square, the heart of the city government, first as a Roman forum of the city, then, in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with the Palazzo della Ragione (now known as the Palladian Basilica) where justice was administered and the Loggia del Capitanio, home the representative of the Republic of Venice.
In the square - rectangular in shape - also fit the Tower Bissara, the civic tower (with its 82 meters, one of the tallest buildings in the city), the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà with St. Vincent's Church (dedicated to the patron of the city) and the two columns, one with the Lion of St. Mark and the other with the Redeemer statue.
Today the square is traditionally the crossroads of business and leisure in the city.
During the year Piazza dei Signori hosts a number of events and shows and is also known for being a place often used as a meeting point for manifestations. On Tuesday and Thursday morning a market is held in the square.
