In the picturesque setting of Palazzo Pomarici (XVII century) a vast collection of works telling the history of Italian and international sculpture from the late 1800s to today. This is the MUSMA (Museum of Contemporary Sculpture Matera): combination of sculpture and some of the most striking features sculpted in the heart of the Sassi.
Museum rooms cover not only the built-up areas, but also the deep underground, where the works of art are enhanced by the suggestion and the force of the rocky environments.
The MUSMA, created by the Zétema Foundation under the patronage of the Municipality of Matera, collects more than 300 works in bronze, marble, iron, terracotta, plaster, wood, paper as well as drawings and engravings: a heritage coming from donations of artists, of families of artists, private collectors, art critics, national and international galleries and by the Circle "La Scaletta" which since 1987 promotes the "Great Exhibitions in the Sassi of Matera".
Finally, the Scheiwiller Library, with more than 4000 volumes, a rich collection of monographs, catalogs and art books, donated by Alina Kalczyńska, widow of the famous Milanese publisher.
