Built in 1470, extended by the Venetians in 1509 and completed in 1630 with the addition of the ramparts and walls. The walkway on the walls provides a splendid view over the town and its gulf. The central body of the fortress, or Captain’s House, hosts the exhibition rooms of the Museo Civico-Armeria (City Museum-Armoury). During the summer, theatrical performances and concerts are held in the castle’s courtyard. The Lalio ramparts house the Lapidario Tergestino, with 130 archaeological finds from the Roman era, including funeral monuments, bas-reliefs and various architectural fragments.
