On October 28, 1927, at the behest of Mussolini, water from the Sele River was distributed for the first time in Lecce through the Apulian Aqueduct. The occasion was celebrated with the construction of a monumental fountain, a work by the Lecce sculptor Antonio Mazzotta.

The fountain was built of Trani stone and bronze. The basin and the central core, representing a bundle of organ pipes with bronze binding, are made of Trani stone; the group of statues surmounting the bundle is made of bronze.

The ensemble symbolizes the harmony of the waters that quench the thirst of the people of Puglia.

After being removed for many years, in 1989 it was relocated to its original location.
