The monument to the musician Gaetano Donizetti, a work by Francesco Jerace, was placed in the gardens adjacent to the city's theater that bears his name and inaugurated on September 26, 1897, on the centenary of his birth.
On a large semicircular marble seat, the musician is depicted listening rapturously to the music, played on the lyre by the Muse.
The sculptural complex is in statuary marble and rests on a triple-stepped base; each of the four sides of the base is adorned with a marble altar.
The monument's evocative location - it is surrounded by a pool of water - while enhancing its architectural features, harmony of dimensions, and style, poses the most serious danger to its integrity due to the high environmental humidity and the constant presence of birds that unfortunately leave their droppings on site.
