In an abandoned quarry in Altamura, a reservoir has been discovered, dating back some 70 million years ago, with more than 4000 well-preserved dinosaur footprints. It includes footprints of more than 200 specimens of at least 5 different species. Most of the footprints belong to herbivorous dinosaurs, but there are also carnivorous dinosaurs. Fossils of this kind have been found in other parts of the world, but some factors make the footprints found at Altamura unique in their kind for the state of conservation and quality for the large number of different species.
