The city of Altamura decided to build a new theater to honor the memory of its illustrious citizen, the musician Saverio Mercadante, died in Naples on December 17th 1870. The interior has a horseshoe shape and consists of four tiers of boxes and the audience, so as to contain about 500 seats. The historical curtain, painted by Montagano, depicts Frederick II of Swabia in the act of being updated on the status of the cathedral works.
