A Venice airport water taxi transfer swaps the road for the lagoon: after collecting your bags you walk to the dock outside, and the boat carries you from Marco Polo straight into the canals. The taxi is shared, so all passengers travel together in the same boat, and you may wait a little for the others to arrive.
The boat drops you as close to your hotel as the water allows. Some hotels along the Grand Canal have a landing where you are picked up or dropped off directly. For hotels on the smaller inner canals, a meeting point within walking distance is arranged. Guests of the JW Marriott on Isola delle Rose and of San Clemente Island get off at San Marco, near the hotel's own shuttle boat.
