This Grand Canal gondola ride with app commentary starts with a host, who explains a few curiosities about gondolas and gondoliers. You then download the free app, which narrates your route while the gondolier does the rowing, so you can simply look around.
The boat moves along the Grand Canal and into the narrower, hidden waterways beside it. On the way you pass the palaces of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Gritti Palace, the church of the Salute and Punta della Dogana, as well as the La Fenice theatre and Mozart's House. The ride ends with a view over the Saint Mark's Basin and the island of San Giorgio.
Inside a Venetian palace, the Gondola Gallery adds the story of the boat itself:
- a real gondola up close, shown in cross-section
- a handmade oar and the tools used to build the boat
- a recreated felze, the gondola's cabin, and a virtual journey down the Grand Canal
The experience lasts about 50 minutes: a 20-minute introduction followed by roughly 30 minutes in the gondola. The shared option seats at most five people per boat, and the gondolier assigns seats to balance the weight. A private ride and a ticket to Ca' Rezzonico are available as options. Stay seated in the gondola; large bags are not allowed. The commentary comes from the app, not from the gondolier.
