The Botanical Gardens consist of a natural reserve comprising the Biasoletto wood and the Farneto wood (for a total of 90 ha). The Gardens were established in 1842 for the sake of botanical research, and yet are now open to a much broader public interested in enriching its own naturalistic culture, or simply in escaping from a congested urban environment. The gardens aim to satisfy the needs of both advanced scientific research and a new environmental awareness, since they have taken on the role of the conservation, cultivation and reproduction of officinal plants, plants for textile production and foodstuffs, local horticultural varieties, spontaneous and endemic flora of the region and surrounding areas, aquatic and ponds plants, succulent plants. For this reason The Botanical Gardens may be seen as an island of floristic variety which plays a strategic role in the conservation of biodiversity. These the itineraries to experience: an anthology of magical plants of religious and mythological importance; the layout of the garden dedicated to the officinal plants; several collections of ornamental plants in the formal garden; a collection of dye displays the main historical species used by dyers; in the poisonous garden the most widespread toxic or lethal houseplants are on display.
