Church of the Sacred Heart: what to see and tips

The Church of the Sacred Heart overlooks the gardens of the Prolungamento a mare, in Savona. It is a large, sober and austere church, built between 1935 and 1937 for the new districts that grew up between the Priamar Fortress and the Letimbro stream.

It has a single nave and no bell tower: its beauty lies in the decoration. There are the mosaics by Mario Rivetta, in the presbytery and on the walls, and the stained-glass windows inspired by Genesis by Savona artist Sandro Lorenzini, as well as some ceramics.

One canvas is almost sixty years older than the church: it was painted in 1877 by the Savona painter Veronica Murialdo. Since 2013, on Sundays and holy days, the Divine Liturgy has also been celebrated here for Ukrainian Catholics of the Byzantine Rite.
