It is placed in Via Garibaldi, specifically in Largo Marinai Russi. Its history begins in 1839 when Pietro Tenerani, a famous sculptor of the 19th century, made the first bronze statue representing Ferdinand II, wearing his uniform and having in his hand some certificates in support of the city. During the revolution of 1848, when the Bourbon king bombed the city for 8 months, earning him the name of “bomb king,” the citizens took the statue, which was placed in Piazza Duomo and melted it to make bullets to resist the Bourbon army.
After the failure of the revolution of 1848, the Bourbon king again took control of the territory and another statue was made. The present bronze statue, made by Tenerani in 1852, represents the king with his right hand up and his left one near his sword. It is full of details such as the embroidery of the cloak and his calm expression. It was housed in the Regional Museum till 1973 and then placed here.
