In front of the wonderful building of the Chamber of Commerce, there is the statue dedicated to Charles III of Bourbon. The king came to the city in March 1735 and stayed here for about two months; then he came to Palermo, where on the 30th of June, he was crowned King of Sicily.
The work was commissioned by the Municipality to the sculptor Saro Zagari, who made the statue in Rome. It was inaugurated the 18th of January 1860, during the celebrations in honor of the Bourbon dynasty.
In the beginning, the statue was placed in a little square along the ancient Via Ferdinandea (now Via Garibaldi) and then it was moved several times since 1970.
The king rises up on a graceful cylindrical pedestal, decorated by neoclassical swags. His figure is covered by a large decorated cloak and by a refined cuirass.
