In order to remember the charity work that Queen Elena of Montenegro did for the people of Messina in January 1909, after the earthquake of 1908, the citizens dedicated this statue to her that can now be admired in Largo Seggiola, a little square in via Cesare Battisti.
This work was made in 1960 by Antonio Berti in Florence, and it was realized thanks to the funds collected through a subscription.
The queen is on a pedestal whose base is decorated by bronze bas reliefs, which represent the actions of the queen, and other scenes from the earthquake.
