Built in 1190, the Rio is a canal that bisects the city, connecting the Lower Lake to the Upper Lake. To realize this work aimed at regulating the waters of the lakes through elevation changes, the marshes between the Civitas Vetus and the Civitas Nova were drained and reclaimed.
