Built between 1886 and 1892 atop a 16th century fortification, this Neo-gothic style mansion and grounds complex dominates both the city and the harbour and delights visitors with its extraordinary views.
Donated to the City of Genoa by its creator, Captain Enrico Alberto D’Albertis in 1932, the building was refurbished and re-opened to the public in 2004 and offers visitors a tour of the Captain’s home and exotic, colonial memorabilia. The halls in this fascinating house-cum-museum, together with the installations of indigenous, ethnographical and archaeological exhibits collected by Captain D’Albertis and other explorers in Africa, the Americas and Oceania allow us to look at both our own culture and the many different cultures of the world with fresh eyes.
The Museum houses a display on folk music (curators: Echo Art) and another on traditional medicine from China, India, Tibet and the Arabic-Islamic world (curators: Celso Institute of Oriental Studies).
