MAMbo is the Bologna Modern Art Museum.
With its 9,500 sq. m. devoted to visual culture and experimentation, the building of the former “Forno del Pane” is a factory of creativity and a centre of the most advanced present.
The Permanent Collection of the museum traces the history of Italian art from World War II to the present day, as seen through the experience of the former Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Bologna.
By means of restorations, new acquisitions, donations and long term loans, the Collection keep on being object of steady study and renovation. Since October 2012 the permanent collection is organized in nine thematic areas that document some of the most innovative aspects of the artistic practice from the second half of the twentieth century to present: Arte e ideologia; 1977 – Arte e Azione; 1968. I – Nuove Prospettive; 1968. II - Arte Povera e dintorni; Forma 1; L'Informale; Arcangeli, l'Ultimo Naturalismo; Focus on Contemporary Italian Art and Nuove acquisizioni.
MAMbo is the main seat of the Istituzione Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, which also includes Museo Morandi and Casa Morandi, Museo per la Memoria di Ustica, Villa delle Rose and Residenza per artisti Sandra Natali.
Since November 2012 MAMbo's venue temporarily contains also the Museo Morandi's collection. The new exhibition project analyses the motifs and periods that characterized Giorgio Morandi's activity and offers a second reading of his course also through works of contemporary artists that emphasize the importance and extraordinary novelty of his research.
The museum devotes large-scale solo shows to well-known Italian and foreign artists, in a perspective open to research and to dialogue between the works and the display context.
Its activity began in 2007 with “Vertigo. The century of off-media art from Futurism to the Web”: a demonstration of method which aimed to document the instances of stylistic and technological trespassings and contaminations from the historic avant-gardes to our own day.
This was followed by some notable exhibitions, of which we may mention those of Luigi Ontani, Jeroen de Rijke and Willem de Rooij, Giuseppe Penone, Giorgio Morandi (in collaboration with the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art) Trisha Donnelly, Sarah Morris, Seth Price, Gilberto Zorio, Matthew Day Jackson, Marcel Broodthaers, Plamen Dejanoff.
MAMbo comprises an introduction to and teaching of the contemporary aesthetics. Education Department’s objective is to bring visitors of every kind and age group into contact with the forms of expression of our time, providing instruments which will aid their understanding.
The Bologna Modern Art Museum with cultural and academic institutions to promote opportunities for reflection involving scholars as well as the general public, stimulating the debate on contemporary culture.
