About this tour
The Carrara marble quarries jeep tour starts with a ride, not a walk. Your guide, who is also the driver, takes an off-road vehicle up into the hills to quarries as high as 1,000 metres above sea level, where marble has been extracted since Roman times.
Up there the guide explains how marble is extracted and how the methods have changed since Roman times. You also stop at the quarry from which Michelangelo picked the marble for his sculptures, and hear what this stone has meant for art and culture.
- The marble caves of Carrara, among the most famous in the world
- The quarry chosen by Michelangelo
- A visit to a lard factory, to taste Lardo di Colonnata
The second half turns to food. The lard of Colonnata was part of the cavers' traditional diet, and the visit shows where it comes from. Snacks with local specialities are included, so you leave the mountain having tasted what the quarrymen ate.
The tour lasts about three hours. Hotel pickup and drop-off are not included. Guides work in English, Italian and French.
