How to get to Garfagnana
To reach the valley the easiest connecting is from Lucca departing from Piazzale Verdi. For timetables please visit the website of the bus CLAP.
The valley is crossed by the railway line Lucca-Aulla. Apart from Castelnuovo Garfagnana, the main stations are: Barga-Gallicano, Castelvecchio Pascoli, Fosciandora, Villetta-San Romano, Poggio-Careggine-Vagli, Camporgiano, Piazza al Serchio, Pieve San Lorenzo.
Once reached the motorway exit of Lucca on the A11 Firenze-Mare, continue along the State Road 445 of Garfagnana which runs through the whole valley. For those coming from Versilia it is possibile to cross the tunnel Cipollaio (50 km from Forte dei Marmi) and continue on the road of Arni (scenic road nestled in the woods!). Coming from the East the steps of Pradarena and the one of Radici connect respectively with Reggio Emilia and Modena.
The Garfagnana is an ideal destination for families because all locations are easily accessible by car and equipped for the reception of children and adults. It 's the perfect place for lovers of camping or overnight stays at high altitude, but in summer the advice is to inquire in advance about availability, while in winter better ascertain the actual accessibility of some shelters and their opening period.
