Piazza Giuseppe Verdi is located in the city centre of Bologna, not far from “le due torri” (the two towers, symbols of the city), crossed by Via Zamboni, university centre par excellence.
In 1951 this square came to be known as Piazza Verdi and close to it, some important streets may be found: Via Giuseppe Petroni, Via dei Bibiena, Largo Resighi, Via de' Castagnoli and Via del Guasto. Moreover, some valuable buildings stand out onto the square: Palazzo Paleotti (from 1877 to 1890 it housed Aurelio Saffi, an important figure in the struggles for Italian unification; at present it hosts a university study hall), Teatro Comunale di Bologna (the Municipal Theatre) and one side of Basilica di San Giacomo Maggiore (a church).
