Initially dedicated to St. Sebastian, the church was built by the family Passaro in 1091 and had a Romanesque style. It was formed by three aisles, but in the second half of the twelfth century, the church was brought to the current level and a single aisle remained. Evidences of the ancient architecture are the two arches on the right wall of the church.
In 1957 the church was dedicated to St. John Chrysostom, which literally means "golden mouth" in reference to his oratory skills.
Today, being used by the Christians of the Eastern Byzantine rite, the main altar in the Baroque style has been replaced with a square shape, preceded by an iconostasis painted in two orsini: at the top are depicted scenes of saints distributed into panels; in the lower four hieratic figures representing the Saviour, the Mother of God, St. Peter and St. Paul. At the center of the apse is a canvas of the Madonna with the hands at the top and sometimes the Divine Infant on the chest, built by Buono in 1968.
