The Hotel de France is a historic building in Palermo located in the Tribunali district. The building, dating back to the 17th century, was originally known as the "Castello di S. Onofrio", but at the end of the 19th century it was transformed by the owners into a hotel, and at that time it was the most luxurious hotel in the city.
In 1936 the hotel was closed and, after the war, the building was purchased by the University of Palermo who transformed it into "Casa del goliardo". The university dormitory was closed at the end of the 1970s. After a long period of degradation and neglect, the building was restored. In December 2009 it was reopened as a guest house for foreign researchers.
