The grand structure, designed by architect Alberto Piacentini to serve as the civic tower of Bergamo's new center, was built using white marble, polychrome marble, and bronze.
Inaugurated in 1924, the original design by Piacentini underwent significant modifications just a few years later. The goal was to adapt the construction to a new purpose: there was a need to commemorate the sacrifice of the eight hundred Bergamaschi who fell in the Great War, dedicating to them an important monument that would perpetuate their memory.
The municipality of Bergamo then decided that Piacentini's tower, due to its size and location, could best fulfill this need and therefore chose not to commission a specific project. Today, the great tower stands as a symbol of the municipality and a solemn tribute to the sacrifice of its sons.
