Designed by Angiolo Mazzoni in 1929, the Palazzo delle Poste e Telegrafi was completed and inaugurated in 1932 during an urban and architectural redevelopment of the area near the former San Marco hospital. It was criticized for its rich decorations (blown glass lamps, doors with wooden and alabaster frames, and furniture by Venini) but praised for its size and avant-garde architecture. Inside the building are two canvases by Mario Sironi: "Work in the City" and "Work in the Fields." Two of the four statues against the facade above the basin, lined with mosaics and supplied by a bronze sculpture depicting a dolphin, are the work of sculptor Nino Galizzi.
