The Protestant Cemetery, also known as the Cemetery of the English, was instituted for the burial of foreign non-Catholic residents of Rome who could not be buried in Catholic cemeteries. 

According to the date of the oldest tomb there, its origin dates back to 1738. The presence of ruins and pine and cypress trees made it a favourite place for romantic poets and artists, and John Keats and Percy Shelley are also buried here. Many graves are decorated with motifs of classical themes.
