Among the ancient monuments and palaces of Via San Martino, we find the Palazzo dei Consoli del Mare, which belonged to the courts of San Martino and was built during the reign of Cosimo I in 1551 to judge cases merchant. Since 1889 it hosts the office of the Rivers and Ditches who bought the property in 1910. This office has in charge the regulation of ditches and drains of water in the plain of Pisa.
The sober façade of the building was rebuilt in the sixteenth century on the base, probably (but there is no evidence) of a drawing by Michelangelo. Inside there are frescoes dating back to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries attributed to A. Ghirlanda, S. Marucelli and B. Poccetti. In the vault of the stairs you can see grotesque decorations.
