Piazza Cavalli in Piacenza is named after the equestrian monuments dedicated to the Farnese, by Francesco Mochi.
The historical and political center of the city is the outstanding Piazza dei Cavalli, so called after the magnificent equestrian statues enriching it. Once known as “Piazza Grande”, it was opened in the 80s of the 12th century during the construction of the Gothic Palace, and is as old as the neighboring San Francesco Church.
It has a central position with respect to the main medieval roads along which merchant aristocracy lived and had its main businesses. During the centuries the aspect of the square changed after the construction, in the 17th century, of the "Merchants Board” and of the neoclassical Governor Palace.
