The heart of the city is a hub of multiple squares, centered on the Broletto/Duomo complex, each characterized by its own specific role: Piazza Grande connects, through the "zipper" of the cathedral, Piazza Piccola, the ancient "atrium" of the double Romanesque cathedral replaced by the Renaissance cathedral; in addition to this, the bishop's palace and the remains of the civic tower, which collapsed in 1989, face it; in the center of the square stands the equestrian statue of Regisole, a modern copy by Francesco Messina of an original from the Roman period destroyed by the Jacobins.
