Begin your tour with an exterior visit to the cathedral, one of Reggio Emilia’s most important religious buildings, known for its elegant neoclassical façade. From the cathedral, continue toward Piazza San Prospero, where you’ll stop at Panificio Melli, an institution in the city since 1968. Enjoy a tasting of gnocco al forno and focaccia allo stracchino. The Melli family has been running this bakery for generations, combining traditional craftsmanship with a modern approach to production. After this first delicious break, visit the Basilica of San Prospero (outside), dedicated to the city’s patron saint. This church, famous for its Renaissance architecture and the six marble lions that guard the entrance, is one of the most beloved monuments in Reggio Emilia. From the basilica, walk a short distance to a cozy tavern offering typical local products. Share a platter of mixed cold cuts and enjoy some water. The tavern, open since 2000, is well known for its warm atmosphere, high-quality products, and a good selection of wines. Then, take a pleasant walk through Piazza Fontanesi, one of the most charming squares in Reggio Emilia, often filled with locals enjoying coffee or an afternoon stroll. Continue to the Museo del Tricolore (outside), the museum dedicated to the Italian flag, which was born here in Reggio Emilia in 1797. This stop offers a fascinating look into the city’s contribution to national history. Next, move toward Piazza del Monte, one of the city’s main squares, and then to the nearby Teatro Municipale Valli, a splendid neoclassical building that represents the cultural heart of Reggio Emilia. End your tour with a stop at Gelateria, located on Via Guido da Castello. Founded in 1954, this gelateria takes its name from the famous Italian expedition that conquered the K2 mountain that same year. Enjoy a cup or cone with three flavors of homemade gelato.
