The guided tour of Parma is not just a journey into the land of world-famous gastronomic products like raw ham and Parmigiano Reggiano, but also an opportunity to discover the city’s most beautiful treasures in the City of Culture 2021. The tour begins with a visit to the most beautiful and appreciated religious buildings, such as the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, largely frescoed by Correggio, featuring the stunning decoration of the dome: an imaginary open sky with the apostles on the clouds and the figure of Christ at the center. Nearby is the most scenic square in Parma, with the Cathedral, the Baptistery, and the Bishop’s Palace. The tour continues with the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a splendid example of Romanesque architecture, with its distinctive façade and, inside, the magnificent fresco cycle of the octagonal dome depicting the Assumption of the Virgin, painted in the 16th century by Correggio. In front of the Cathedral stands the octagonal Baptistery, entirely in pink marble; walking around it, visitors can admire the zoophore, a large frieze featuring various animals. The tour proceeds through the streets of the historic center to the main square of the city, lively with cafés and restaurants, where the imposing Palazzo del Governatore with its elegant neoclassical façade is located. Formerly the Palace of the Merchants, it is now a museum space. Not far from here is the Church of Santa Maria della Steccata, dating back to the Renaissance period, with the image of the Madonna on the façade telling a story to be discovered. Inside, the dome’s vault frescoed by Parmigianino is a true masterpiece and his last work. Strolling through the streets of the historic center, we can admire the exterior of the Teatro Regio, a temple of opera music in Italy and worldwide, renowned for its elegant neoclassical façade, characterized by a portico with columns and large windows that enhance its symmetry and architectural harmony, as well as for the refined atmosphere that reflects the great Italian operatic tradition. The guided tour concludes at the Palazzo della Pilotta, an imposing monumental complex symbolizing the ducal power of the Farnese family, which houses several museums within. In front of the palace, we can admire the statue of Giuseppe Verdi, a famous 19th-century Italian composer and author of some of the most important and representative operas in the Italian musical tradition.
