About this tour
This 4x4 marble quarry tour in Carrara takes you up into the Apuan Alps, to Cava Valsora, where stone and engineering meet. Quarry staff accompany you through the working site, and your guide is a quarry foreman, so the hour turns into a history lesson on how this demanding trade has changed.
You see how marble was cut in the past and how it is extracted today, and you can enter the underground galleries. Then the track leads to the bio-lake, a calm pool in a former quarry pit. Thanks to the Symbiosis project, the habitat won back from the pit survives while the quarries keep working. Two rare residents live in its water: the Apuan Alpine newt and the Chara algae, species that belong to this part of Tuscany alone.
- Guided ride in a 4x4 through the quarry landscape
- Access to the underground galleries
- Entry to the lake
The visit ends at the lake, after which the 4x4 brings you back to the meeting point. It lasts about an hour. Meals and snacks are not included, and an adult must keep an eye on children throughout.
