Your private driver and guide will meet you at 08:00 AM, near your ship's arrival point, to embark on a scenic hour-long drive to the enchanting medieval city of Lucca. This charming city has been safeguarded by an impressive 16th-century wall, one of the best-preserved Renaissance defenses in Europe, which has helped maintain its original features and Roman street plan. You can start your day with a leisurely bike ride along the beautiful tree-lined promenade on top of the ancient walls, offering breathtaking views of the palazzi and piazzas of the old city, as well as the surrounding hills. Bike rental is available at an additional cost of 5 EUR per bike per hour, payable on the day of the tour. Delve into Lucca's rich history, starting with the Church of San Michele in Foro, built on the site of the original Roman forum, where the renowned composer Giacomo Puccini began his musical journey as a choir boy. Stroll along the lively shopping street of Via Fillungo, leading you to the Church of San Frediano, which dates back to the 6th century. Be sure to visit the tomb of Saint Zita (1278), mentioned by Dante in the Inferno, whose mummified body is on display. Next, explore the unique Piazza Anfiteatro, a 1st-century arena built under Emperor Claudius, featuring 54 arches and a cave that could accommodate up to 10,000 spectators. Today, the base of the original amphitheater lies 3 meters below the center, which was reconstructed in the 1800s as the town's marketplace. The majestic Cathedral of San Martino houses the precious relic, the Volto Santo, a cedar wood crucifix said to be a true portrait of Jesus, sculpted by Nicodemus, an eyewitness to the crucifixion. Take your time to wander through the city, discovering local artisans and tempting delicatessens offering Tuscan specialties, including Lucca's renowned olive oil. Be sure to visit the underground cellars of Enoteca Vanni, featuring an impressive selection of wines from all over Italy. You will have free time for lunch, and your driver can recommend some excellent local eateries or even a lovely vineyard on the outskirts of town. After lunch, embark on a short drive to the 11th-century maritime republic of Pisa, where you'll enjoy a driving tour of the city, culminating at the breathtaking Piazza dei Miracoli, featuring the Baptistry, the cathedral, Campo Santo Cemetery, and, of course, the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa. You'll have some free time to explore the city on foot before meeting up with your driver for the return journey back to your ship in the port of Livorno, arriving around 17:00.
