According to a document of 1466 it was the building of the Municipal Parliament, where citizen leaders met at the tolling of the Cathedral bells.
In 1601 a fire in a warehouse in Piazza Mercantile spread from nearby houses to the palace. Being in it the arsenal, many people intervened promptly to carry off the barrels of gunpowder and avoid the worst. Unfortunately, the last two barrels were reached by flames generating an explosion that took 60 lives and destroyed many buildings, including the neighboring church of Santa Maria della Misericordia.
In 1602 the University rebuilt the palace and in 1604 a clock made in Germany (the first in Puglia to toll the quarter over the hours) was added in the tower.
In the eighteenth century the Ferrarase merchant Stefano Fabbri built the lodge.
The Sedile Palace was later used as the Municipal Theatre: in 1835, however, during a show a crunch made people fear the collapse of the entire structure: very panic but no victims. Since then, however, it was decided not to use it more as a theater and the building was sold to private owners.
