In 1996, the esteemed Villa Panza was generously entrusted to FAI by its former owners, Giuseppe and Giovanna Panza di Biumo. This 18th-century villa, situated atop Biumo Hill in Varese, has evolved over the centuries to become a renowned hub for contemporary art. Initially built as a country residence by Marquis Paolo Antonio Menafoglio, the estate underwent transformations in the 19th century under Luigi Canonica and again in the 1930s under Piero Portaluppi. It wasn't until the 1950s, however, that Villa Panza's character was redefined by Count Giuseppe Panza, who began accumulating an extraordinary collection of contemporary art that would eventually gain global recognition. Today, over 150 works by American artists, focusing on the themes of light and color, harmoniously coexist with ancient rooms, Renaissance furniture, and exquisite collections of African and pre-Columbian artifacts. The stable block stands out for its remarkable exhibits, showcasing site-specific installations by legendary light artists Dan Flavin, James Turrell, and Robert Irwin. As a premier international art venue, Villa Panza offers a rich and immersive experience for visitors of all ages, with a range of activities designed specifically for children. Whether you're exploring the historic building, strolling through the Land Art installations in the park, or savoring a culinary experience at the haute cuisine restaurant "Luce," Villa Panza is the perfect destination to spend a day surrounded by art and beauty.
