Looking out onto the sea, it is the first of three buildings on the right hand side of the square. It was designed in 1870 by Bruni, who also designed the Town Hall. It was nicknamed Model because it was supposed to act as an architectural example for the renovation being carried out on what was then Piazza Grande (now Piazza Unità d’Italia). The façade is split into five sections and decorated with huge statues (Telamoni) set at the top of the building: they are grabbing their crotches, a scaramantic gesture to ward off bad luck.
