Second only to the Early Christian basilica in Via Madonna del Mare, this is the oldest place of worship in Trieste. The services of the Reformed Evangelist Community, both Helvetic and Waldensian, are held here. A plaque above the main entrance indicates the church was put up for auction in 1786. The Helvetic community of Trieste purchased it and reopened it for reformed worship. The Basilica was built in Roman style in the mid 12th century. Despite having been renovated a number of times, the work carried out in the 1930s brought the original Roman elements back to light. An impressive rose window stands out on the façade above the porch, surmounted by a bell tower that was probably an old guard tower. The church plan is unsymmetrical, with a central nave and two smaller lateral aisles, separated by a line of columns. The Presbytery, without an apse, contains a marble slab depicting the Lord ‘s Supper. The remains of the frescoes date back to 14th century and include scenes from Emperor Constantine’s life.
