Originally the fountain was placed at the feet of the left tower to supply with water the kitchens of the Ducal Palace.

At the end of the 16th century it was surrounded by a basin, during the 18th century a low wall was added to protect the steps going to the basin. In 1865 the fountain was moved in the actual site. Architect Cesare Costa designed two curvilinear flights. In 1946 the fountain was connected to the municipal waterwork.
