The Lion Fountain is a historic fountain in Naples, located on Via Mergellina.
The fountain, formerly known as the Mergoglino Fountain, was built in the 18th century during the renovation of the Royal Casino in Mergellina. It was commissioned by Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies because at that point, beneath the hill of Monteleone, a very fresh and precious spring emerged, supplying water for the royal family when they resided in Mergellina.
The fountain consists of two levels, with a semicircular plan, forming a seat at the top of the road. In the center is a lion on a base, while ramps on either side of the base lead to the lower level which originally featured two spouts in the center from which water flowed and collected in the lower basins.
