Porta San Pietro is a gate in the city walls of Lucca, facing south. It was built between 1565 and 1566 and is part of the Renaissance city walls. It was designed by Alessandro Resta. Porta San Pietro opens with three gates surmounted in the center by a shield bearing the coat of arms of Saint Peter with the inscription "libertas" and on the sides by two lions placed in niches, in the ancient openings through which the chains that operated the old drawbridge ran. The side openings were made after the construction of the gate. The gate features an elegant, classic-style tympanum that adds a touch of elegance to the structure. Today, the side gates are used for pedestrian traffic, while the central opening is used for vehicular traffic.
