Existing as early as the 10th century, but far older as evidenced by the Lombard burial artifacts found within, it was rebuilt in the 13th century using terracotta, while the facade was completed in the mid-14th century by Coluccio di Collo. The solution of blind arches - the central one includes a splayed portal - echoes Romanesque themes reinterpreted in light of the new Gothic language. The upper register of the facade was completed some time later. The interior layout was modified several times. In 1647, under the direction of a member of the Bernardini family, the new high altar was built to house an ancient and venerated image of the Crucifix. The cross, temporarily placed in the Duomo, is a precious work of the 12th century.
