The Amenano Fountain is located on the south side of Piazza del Duomo, opposite the Palazzo degli Elefanti.
Built in 1867 by the Neapolitan master Tito Angelini in Carrara marble, it represents the Amenano River as a young man holding a cornucopia from which water flows into a bowl with a rounded edge. The water, overflowing from this bowl, creates a waterfall effect that gives the impression of a sheet.
Hence the Sicilian saying "acqua a linzolu" to indicate the fountain.
The water that falls from the bowl flows into the river below, which runs at a level of about two meters below the square.
Behind the fountain, a staircase in lava stone leads to the Pescheria, an ancient city market which, along with the Vucciria of Palermo, is one of the main folkloristic attractions of the two Sicilian cities.
