The museum originates from the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Contemporanea, established in 1962 with the aim of collecting and exhibiting works acquired by the Municipality through the Premio Arezzo.
After a period of closure in the 1990s, it reopened in December 2003 in its new location in Piazza San Francesco. It houses a permanent collection and organizes temporary exhibitions of twentieth-century and contemporary artists.
