Today Calci is a farming town gathered around the Pieve dei Santi Giovanni ed Ermolao, surrounded by olive terraces on the lower slopes and overlooked higher up by Monte Serra, covered in pine and chestnut woods. From the top, on clear days, you can enjoy beautiful views stretching from the city of Pisa to the Tuscan Archipelago.
Because of its strategic position and the nearby Fortress of La Verruca, Calci was always caught up in the bloody medieval wars between Pisa and Florence. From the 16th century on, however, the village began to grow along the stream, where until the last century more than a hundred mills driven by waterwheels were at work. The mild climate in every season invites you to walk to places of natural, environmental, historic and artistic interest.
Set in this extraordinary landscape is the Calci Charterhouse, founded by monks in 1366. The hermit and community life of the place is expressed in the building's two fundamental architectural elements: the cell and the church.
Its present appearance was completely renewed and transformed during the Baroque period and at the end of the 18th century, when the finest artists of the 1700s enriched the Charterhouse. Craftsmen from Carrara worked on the facade and on the interior, which is extremely rich in frescoes, polychrome marble and woodwork.
Also worth a visit is the Pieve dei Santi Giovanni ed Ermolao, founded in 1116 and graced by a beautiful baptismal font, one of the most important examples of the classicizing style taken on by sculpture in the Pisa and Lucca area.
