The monastery devoted to Saint Gemma Galgani is located in Via di Tiglio, outside the city walls of Lucca. The monastery is home to the community of Passionist Nuns founded by St. Paul of the Cross in 1771 and is the place where Saint Gemma lived and is buried in. After the death of the Saint, on 11 April 1903, the congregation recorded an extension both in Italy and abroad.
In 1935 the work on the new monastery began, to observe what was said by the Saint, who in one of her ecstasy, had a vision of Christ asking it with insistent desire. The project was entrusted to the architect Italo Baccelli that for the domed bell tower was inspired by the Berlin Cathedral.
The Second World War led to the interruption of work which, after alternating phases, was finally completed in 1965 with the construction of the dome by the Bolognese architect Adriano Marabini.
Saint Gemma is buried in the monastery, her remains rest in an urn beneath the high altar created by the sculptor Francesco Nagni.
Inside the church, you can see the works of Primo Conti: altarpiece (Christ that gives the stigmata to Saint Gemma Galgani supported by the Angel of the Passion) and the two mosaics (St. Paul of the Cross and St. Gabriel). To the left of you notice the marble group of the Passion by Tommaso Gismondi, the author of the two bronze reliefs on the walls with the Sorrows of Mary.
