The Church of San Pietro Somaldi is located in the square of the same name, situated east of the amphitheater, near the medieval city walls. The Lombard origins of the church are attested to by the name itself, which derives from Sumualdo, the founder of the original church in 763. The building was later rebuilt at the end of the 12th century and saw the completion of works in the 14th century with the upper part of the bell tower and the brick apse. The facade dates back to the second half of the 13th century and presents typical features of Lucchese architecture. Built in sandstone with sparse white stripes, it ends with a blind arcade featuring capitals and swollen, inverted foliage. The central portal is of great interest, with its architrave depicting the delivery of the keys to Peter, a work by Guido Bigarelli da Como in 1248.
