The church of Saints Paolino and Donato is commonly known just as San Paolino and is located in one of the most typical streets of the historical center of Lucca.
The existence of the area relative to the current building was already mentioned in 738 as a church dedicated to St. George. After 1000, the church was dedicated to St. Anthony instead. The discovery of the bones in the church of St. Paulinus in 1261 and the demolition of the nearby church of San Donato in 1513 led to the decision to reconstruct the religious building in a more sumptuous and dedicate it to the Saints Paolino and Donato.
The work started in 1515 by Baccio da Montelupo (Bartolomeo Sinibaldi) was completed in 1536 through the work of Sebastiano Bertolani da Brancoli that although the death of his predecessor, he continued with the development of the original project.
The church of SS. Paolino and Donato is the only fully Renaissance church of the city of Lucca. Its facade is formed of three overlapping orders, in a linear and sober way, emerging for its height and its light color on the small widening of the street.
On either side of the door, the two niches were used in 1710 as a place for the statues of the two Saints.
The interior of the church is spread in stone and with a vaulted ceiling. The two aisles are divided into four zones by large Doric pilasters that recreate the effect of four chapels on each side.
Note the beauty choirs made with marble near the transept, works of Nicolao and Vincenzo Civitali.
Remained immune to the passage of the Napoleonic period, the church of SS. Paolino and Donato still retains its original furnishings, paintings and sculptures.
